	Pure Magic

I heard a song on a Disney ride in Florida many years ago with the phrase ‘If you can dream it, you can do it’. I didn’t think for one moment what an effect that would have on my life as a whole. Yet it makes perfect sense if you think about it. If you can see an image in your head, then there has to be a way to create that image. Otherwise, there would be no movies, no works of art, in fact, hardly anything at all. Since the dawn of time, man has experienced a thirst for creation - the wheel, transport, bridges, architecture, communication systems, and even the movies. The list is endless.

The point I’m trying to make is that, we all have a natural tendency to create and make things, so really, in terms of creating miniatures, you’re half way there already just by being human. Unfortunately, we also have a natural tendency to lack faith in our own abilities. I would never have dreamt when I started building my dolls’ house that in a few years time I’d be writing about the hobby in magazines and producing my first book about miniatures. My first attempts at making miniatures were absolutely dreadful as I look back but at the time I thought they were wonderful. Everyone has to start somewhere. The main aim is that you enjoy the hobby as it has so much to offer. Just persevere and you will find it does get easier and your miniatures will get smaller if you think your first attempts are a little on the large side as mine so often were. You wouldn’t believe the times I hear from customers at fairs ‘I couldn’t do that’ or ‘Mine wouldn’t look like that’. Well there was a time I looked at a little packet of silk ribbon roses on a stall at a fair and thought they were lovely and how clever the lady was who had made them. I ‘knew’ I’d never be able to make them to look like that so I bought several packets to keep me going. Now I could make them in my sleep.


			Just have faith and remember what Abraham Lincoln once said: ‘What we hope ever to do with ease, we must first do with diligence’.





	And the magic?, where does that come in you may ask. Well, miniatures are magic. They have the power to transport us to lands we once could only dream of.

	I always remember the first room I ever decorated in the basement of my dolls’ house featured on the ‘My Favourite Things’ page. It was the music room. I arranged the furnishings and just sat and looked in at this tiny room for what seemed like hours, the little cake stand full of tiny cakes ready for the musician’s tea break, the flickering fire and the pretty Tiffany lights. I was totally enthralled. I know this perhaps wasn’t the greatest miniature room ever created but you must remember it was my very first attempt and I loved it. I particularly liked the winding staircase which went up into the lounge and could almost hear Rex Harrison’s dulcet tones from ‘My Fair Lady’ as he walked up a similar one in the film. It was just the best thing, in fact, you could say it was pure magic!
